Origin
- First seen in a litter of siamese kittens in the USA. Two
of these kittens were mated and proved to breed true. Granted official
recognition in 1963 in the USA - but not for another 20 years in the
UK.
Temperament - Playful
and intelligent. Slightly quieter than the Siamese.
Description - Lithe
and elegant, with a typically siamese wedge-shaped head; long, straight
nose and eyes that are almond-shaped. Coat long and silky with a plume-like
tail. Ears may have tufting.
Colours
- Seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, tortie and tabby.

Origin
- Originating in Burma, the Birman was considered a sacred
temple cat. Imported to France in 1919 - the breed did not reach the
UK until the 1960's.
Temperament
- The Birman is intelligent, quiet and un-demanding.
Description - Lithe-bodied
and elegant with a rounded head, medium-sized, widely-spaced ears and
blue eyes. The coat is long and silky with a neck ruff, bushy tail,
with dark points. All four paws should be white - a distinctive feature
of this breed.
Colours
- Seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, cream, tortie, tortie-tabby
(torbie in USA) and tabby.

Origin
- Thought to be descended from the cats Marie Antoinette sent
to America to escape the French Revolution, the Maine Coon gets its
name from the state of Maine, where it was originally found. The "Coon"
part of its name is descriptive of its thick and bushy racoon-like tail.
Temperament - The
Maine Coon has a sweet and friendly nature.
Description - This
breed is believed to be the largest breed of cat, and it is solidly
built with long legs, a long head and a square muzzle, with a pronounced
ruff. The ears and paws are tufted.
Colours
- Almost any coat colour or pattern is accepted with this breed.

- This cat is famous in Norse legends and is believed to posses
extraordinary climbing ability. A popular breed, it did not arrive in
the UK until the late 1980's.
Temperament - Active
and independant - this breed is a superior hunter.
Description - The
Norwegian Forest Cat has a thick, waterproof coat with longer hair around
the ruff, chest and hind legs. The body is large an solidly built, with
long legs, a long body and a triangular face.

Origin
- The background of this popular breed is unknown, but it is
thought to be linked to Colourpoint Persians, Birmans and Siamese.
Temperament - Undemanding,
quiet and gentle.
Description - This
cat is well-known for its habit of becoming limp when held - thus its
name. This ia a muscular cat, with a broad chest, heavy boned legs,
large, flat skull and rounded cheeks. The eyes are blue, large and oval
and the medium-sized ears are set wide apart.

- Seal, blue, chocolate, lilac; colour-point, mitted or bi-colour.

Origin
- The Somali is a semi-longhaired varient of the Abyssinian,
now recognised as a seperate breed.
Temperament - Intelligent
and outgoing.
Description - Medium-sized,
muscular, with a round face and almond-shaped eyes. The coat is dense,
fine and soft with longer fur around the ruff, rear legs and tail.
Colours
- Like the Abbyssinian, the Somali has a treble-ticked coat.
The accepted colours are: sorrel, chocolate, blue, lilac, fawn and silver.
