"Children Playing on a Winter Day" a painting by Chinese artist Su Hanchen (active 1130-1160s AD) of the Song Dynasty period; the painting shows two children waving a peacock feather banner like the one used in Song Dynasty dramatical theater to signal the acting general or leader of troops. If not displayed in the home of a wealthy gentry figure, this painting could very well have been an art piece of the royal family's residence in Hangzhou. (Source: Wen C. Fong and James C.Y. Watt, Possessing the Past: Treasures from the National Palace Museum, Taipei (New York: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1996), plate 81, p. 175. Collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei. Hanging scroll, ink and colors on silk, 196.2 x 107.1 cm)
